Did everyone see your thong?
As a salsa dancer, one of the things you’ll find yourself more aware of is panty lines. You may even go shopping for some thongs if they aren’t already in your wardrobe. Some panties cause lumps and bumps in your clothes that are simply not appealing. Even worse is wearing full size granny panties with hip hugger jeans. You know that shirt that you thought was long enough to cover it? Guess what. You bend over to put on your dance shoes and everyone at the table can see the color of your panties. Plus, the first right-hand turn you do in Salsa will pull your top up a few inches and completely reveal that not so sexy underwear. Don’t let that happen to you. Take special care in choosing your undergarments.
Of course, I’m not advocating thongs for every occasion. There’s definitely a time when you should NOT wear them. A few years ago, I was feeling pretty confident in the clothing I chose to wear for salsa that night. The music was great. The dancing was great. I was having a blast. Well, I was having fun until a male friend pulled me aside and said that he could see my thong when I was spinning on the dance floor. Oh crap. You’ve got to be kidding me! If he saw it, you better believe he was not the only man in the room who did. I was completely devastated. After all, I was not a model and therefore, would not have dared posing for the swimsuit edition of playboy. I’d just started wearing thongs salsa dancing so my panty lines wouldn’t show, but I failed to take other factors into consideration. Lesson learned. Never wear thongs if you have a beautiful skirt that floats very high in the air when you turn. Dancers did not go to the club to see a full moon. So, make sure to add some boy shorts to your shopping list and take care to wear the right undergarments to suit the attire for that evening.
What if you are the friend of a thong wearing female and what if your friend didn’t read my article? You are at a club and you see her dress fly up and oh no, there’s the moon! What now? Don't interrupt her while dancing. That will draw more attention to the problem. Approach her as soon as she exits the dance floor. Let her know that you can see her thong when she spins. Advise her to do the following:
- Don’t spin so hard
- Inform her dance partner to limit the spins to a few and make sure they are gentle
- Ask her dance partner to use his hand to help keep the skirt from flying up so high
- Or, skip salsa and stick with Bachata
Oh, so you think she should just sit in a corner and not dance any more that night? No way. There is no such thing as a bad night of salsa dancing. Deal with it. Dance in moderation. Have a great time.
A special thanks to Wayne who was such a gentleman the night it happened to me. He kept the turns to a minimum and used his hand to keep my skirt from flying up high enough to reveal my bare butt. There are still plenty of nice guys out there!
Does anyone have thong horror stories or advice to share?
